Kallor Veyran sat on his command throne, staring at the helmet in his hand, grasping it with his fingers around the rim and his thumb in the shattered lens of the targeting sensor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat,\u201d he said, \u201cwas a disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Warden of the Void stood next to the navigator\u2019s station, not at attention exactly, but not leaning on the fixtures either. Still in his armor, he had at least shed his jump pack before reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe found the psyker,\u201d he said, simply. \u201cWe let his ritual go on long enough to weaken the veil. We prevented the mortals from finding and using him. The mortals and\u2026 whatever those other things were.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVotann,\u201d Veryan muttered, then looked at the Warden. \u201cDon\u2019t underestimate them. More dangerous than they look.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Warden momentarily looked suspicious. \u201cI thought the Tyranids exterminated them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veyran dropped his helmet to the deck with a loud clank of ceramite on durasteel. \u201cApparently not.\u201d He shook his head. \u201cThis was as costly a success as we have had in a very long time. The Fangguard are all seriously wounded. The Pale Accord barely limped back to the Stormeagle. And the Shatterwi \u2013 \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat was bad luck,\u201d the Warden interrupted. \u201cThe abhumans were sitting there in their transport, doing nothing! Not even searching for the psyker! How was I meant to know there was a tank sitting behind the manufactorium?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veyran stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAn Imperial tank that was coordinating with whatever those things were,\u201d the Warden said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veyran continued to stare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Warden gave a resigned sigh. \u201cThey\u2019re difficult to rein in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re their commander,\u201d Veyran said, looking him directly in the eye. \u201cReining them in is your job. Shock troops that fall to pieces without shocking anything are a drain on resources we cannot currently afford. I told you they would be problematic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Warden sighed again. \u201cAnd the World Eaters?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKoth\u2026\u201d Veryan said the name with a snarl. \u201cKoth is nowhere to be found. His pack apparently hunts wherever it likes, now. If anything is actually leading them I was not aware of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot much different, then.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot much, no.\u201d Veyran shifted minutely in the throne, trying to look on the bright side by physically changing his position. \u201cStill. Success is success, even at a high price. Just be more\u2026 aware, in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Warden of the Void lowered his head in agreement, as deferential as anyone in the Alpha Legion ever got. \u201cAnd next?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur new friends have been delayed,\u201d Veyran said, unconcerned. \u201cIt will be some time yet before the entire cell can be updated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou seem to be taking to it well enough. I heard about the Russ.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veyran gave him the same bowed head, as thankful as the Warden was deferent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUntil then?\u201d the Warden asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
